Jakarta, 28 February 2025 — Youth Ranger Indonesia was honored to be invited to one of the BRICS key events, “BRICS Strategy Discussion: Economic, Geopolitical, and Indonesia’s Role”, organized by Zeekend in collaboration with the Russian Embassy in Indonesia and Bakrie University. This prestigious forum brings together global leaders, policymakers, and experts to explore the evolving economic and geopolitical landscape, with a particular focus on Indonesia’s strategic role in the global arena.
The conference raised strategic issues related to BRICS expansion and Indonesia's role in strengthening economic cooperation and global diplomacy. The main focus was on technological innovation, energy security, and food systems within the framework of BRICS cooperation. The conference featured experts and representatives from Indonesia and Russia discussing the impact of Indonesia's accession to BRICS and the global challenges faced by its member countries.
Ms. Asmiati Abdul Malik, M.A., M.Sc., Ph. D, a lecturer at Bakrie University, outlined how the Trump administration's high tariff policy could trigger BRICS to develop alternative currencies to
reduce dependence on the US dollar. Meanwhile, Russian representatives, such as Dr. Nikita Kuklin and Alexander Ignatov, emphasized the importance of energy security and Indonesia's role in the global supply chain, particularly through its crucial nickel reserves for green technology.
The conference also highlighted the challenges facing BRICS, including economic sanctions, infrastructure gaps, and climate risks. Mr. Tri Purnajaya, from the Indonesian Embassy, emphasized the need for a balanced diplomacy strategy to maintain good relations with BRICS countries and other global partners. Countries like China and India are driving advancements in AI and quantum technologies, while Brazil leads in Amazon bioeconomy R&D, showcasing the bloc’s commitment to sustainable development. Additionally, Brazil, Argentina, and Egypt play crucial roles in global grain and meat supplies, emphasizing the importance of food systems within BRICS.
Youth Ranger Indonesia, as a youth organization focused on diplomacy and sustainable development, sees Indonesia’s accession to BRICS as a key opportunity for young leaders to contribute to strategic policy development and international collaboration for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
